What is a Dirt Betty?

Riding with the Dirt Betty Social Society is unlike any other riding or social experience you’ve had. First, it is a safe, accepting environment where every woman, lady, and girl, regardless of age or riding skill, is welcome.

Second, most rides will exclude our male counterparts. No testosterone here!

Next, Dirt Betty’s have varying skill levels but that is what makes it great…we learn from each other. Some of us have been riding our whole lives and mountain biking is second nature. Others haven’t been on a bike in years. No one is left behind! There will be certain rides that are recommended for intermediate riders (Black Dragon is one), but most rides have a bail out spot for those who want a shorter ride or are unable to go for long distances.

Dirt Betty’s want to ride which means you have many opportunities to ride. Can’t get one of our rides to fit your schedule? We have a “phone tree.” This means you start calling the Betty’s on the list until you find someone who can ride when you want to. No one should have to ride alone.

Lastly, you can just hang out with the girls for an evening at a social event or you can ride every ride. We will even have some fun winter activities when we can’t get on our bikes.

Dirt Betty History

The Dirt Betty Social Society was started by Dondra Abiron in 2004.  Dondra had been mountain biking for more than 20 years and had done some amateur racing in the late 80's.

After moving to Price, Utah, with all of its scenic riding opportunities, she realized that 99% of the time she had to ride with competitive, testosterone-driven guys.  This was okay by any measure, but she figured there had to be other women who were in the same boat.

First, she researched women's riding clubs like the WOMBATS (Women Mountain Bike & Tea Society).  Next, she created a logo and a schedule.  Then, she started telling everyone she knew.

Dondra then met Karen Dolan at the MECCA, San Rafael Swell Bike Festival in Green River and Karen became the driving force behind the recruiting efforts.  In their first year riding together, Karen brought 80% of the new members on rides. The Dirt Betty Social Society has more than 40 women on our email list with new names being added every month.

What the Dirt Betty's Offer

What does membership get you?

1.  Many opportunities to ride (Dirt & Road Bettys), run (Run Bettys) and hang out  - all types and difficulties of trails and roads!  And this year we are excited to offer opportunities for Dirt Bettys to become Tri-Bettys.

2.  A list of member approved names and numbers on a phone tree list.  This list is way for you to call other Dirt Betty members when you want a ride outside the normal riding schedule - so you don't have to ride alone.

3.  Social activities including the popular Recharge Nights (formerly known as Margarita Night).  This is a time to gather together to celebrate everything from birthdays to triathalon completions or the more common, just because.

4.  Resources to connect you to other outdoor groups and activities like the "Women in the Outdoors," Price Area Singletrack Society (PASS), and the Carbon Road Cyclists (CRC).
