Dirt Betty History
The Dirt Betty Social Society was started by Dondra Abiron in 2004. Dondra had been mountain biking for more than 20 years and had done some amateur racing in the late 80's.
After moving to Price, Utah, with all of its scenic riding opportunities, she realized that 99% of the time she had to ride with competitive, testosterone-driven guys. This was okay by any measure, but she figured there had to be other women who were in the same boat.
First, she researched women's riding clubs like the WOMBATS (Women Mountain Bike & Tea Society). Next, she created a logo and a schedule. Then, she started telling everyone she knew.
Dondra then met Karen Dolan at the MECCA, San Rafael Swell Bike Festival in Green River and Karen became the driving force behind the recruiting efforts. In their first year riding together, Karen brought 80% of the new members on rides. The Dirt Betty Social Society has more than 40 women on our email list with new names being added every month.
